The below is taken from my blog – please bare with me, and familiarise yourself with it, before moving on.
“I was born into a family of farmers, and bought up in a rural part of the Welsh Marches: my formative years where spent on my Grandparents farm in the mid ’50’s to early 60’s. My Mother’s family I’ve traced back to 1598! In fact they’ve moved very little in all that time, and still farm in the area that they moved to in the early 1700’s.
Believe me – it was a magical childhood!
My late Grandfather saw to it that I was schooled in certain country ways before he retired. I was taught the simple things, that now seem second nature to me; how to tell the time from the sun; the compass points from the sun and the green and growing and basically to revere nature – Mother Nature. He taught me about the Four Winds, the Three Fates, and those that have gorn on before us and much much more.
In short, he schooled me in the Old Ways.
My research, in fact my search, for what it was he taught me, has been a long and is an on going path, which has lead me through many different twists and turns – all very enjoyable, I must say, but very Crooked Path indeed!”

Lesley was born into a family of farmers, and bought up in a rural part of the Welsh Marches absolute heaven to any rabbit …. except Lesley! A round little rabbit with jampot jaws but she was not like the other white rabbits that hopped in and out of the rabbit hole; Lesley the rabbit was different and she knew it. Born with one black ear, one black and white ear which both flopped down and a sort of black polkd dots, poor Lesley was soon the brunt of the other naughty rabbits jokes and knew at a very early age that she was different! Why are my ears floppy and not standing up straight, why am I not white and fluffy like all the other bunnies? Lesley soon learned that it was not a good thing to be different …
Lesley’s mum and dad had their hands full with 48 children and felt that the little rabbit would have to move because of the amount of bullying by her siblings and friends. She was packed off to her Grandparents farm a few miles down the road where she was raised as a lone rabbit. She spent day after day roaming around alone and learning about nature, the plants, birds but every time she met other rabbits she, once again, was bullied.
Grandfather rabbit decided it was time for Lesley to go to school as she was only learning from him and he did not have the educational skills to teach her so he enrolled her into the old school down by the oak tree at the back of the crooked path by the forest. Lesley was not happy at all about this but Grandfather rabbit told her that she had to go as she was getting too old to be roaming around no-mans-land and it was time for her to learn. The very next day Lesley set out to school with a packed lunch made up for her by Grandmother rabbit; she was not a happy bunny.
Passing by the large hedges, under fences where a vast field opened out that was so green Lesley almost forgot about school. She fantasized about making friends, learning new things and eating the lovely lunch of fresh lettuce leaves and carrots Grandmother rabbit made for her lunch. Quickly realizing she was going to be late, she jumped up and hopped her fasted over to the old school.
At times Lesley wondered why her own Dad and Mother could not look after her. This bothered her a lot but she never said anything to Grandfather or Grandmother rabbit as she did not want to cause trouble. Why had she been sent away when all of her brothers and sisters were at home? Why had her Dad and Mum not been able to look after her? Many many times Lesley pondered this however she could not come up with a reason which made her lonely at times. Maybe today would be different, maybe she will make friends and not be alone all the time in an older rabbits world; Lesley longed for a friend, even just one would do!. With a smile she hopped as fast as she could to find her new friend …. then just maybe she would not be alone all the time.
to be continued….
